MARKET OVERVIEW: US$20 BILLION UPGRADE OF THE PORT SECTOR
The Indonesian government plans an estimated US$20Billion upgrade of the port sector to support growth in domestic, regional and international trade. Domestic sea cargoes are increasing by on average 10% a year and international sea cargoes topped 600 million tons in 2009. Plans for new container terminals and ports to service the rapidly expanding international cruising market have already been announced. Indonesia’s booming mining industry is driving ambitious investment in mining related infrastructure. As the world’s 2nd largest coal exporter, port development is vital. South East Asia’s largest economy which some predict will grow by 60% in the next 5 years requires major upgrades to it’s infrastructure if it is to maximize growth, trade, tourism and employment. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago with over 6,000 inhabited islands and a population of 240 million people, is dependent on it’s maritime transportation and port activities.

MAJOR OPPORTUNITIES: PRIVATISATION
In 2008 the government ended the monopoly of the state-owned ports operator opening the 725 ports market to private sector port builders and operators. Investor friendly regulations are being put in place including a more robust public – private sector partnership legal framework. This privatization and the targeted growth in trade and tourism should provide major opportunities in all sectors of the maritime industry including: shipping & port logistics, ship building & maintenance, conversion and modernization of Indonesia’s ageing shipping fleet, materials handling, supplies and services for offshore rigs and pipelines, communications technology, aquatic tourism, container terminals, port expansion and modernization, naval vessels and equipment, ferry and cruise ship terminals, port and vessel security, aquaculture and private leisure craft supply and maintenance.

Fishing Fleet
The development of fishing ports and the fishing fleet to international standards is also a priority if Indonesia is to achieve it’s goal and become the world’s largest fish producer by 2015 according to the targets set by The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. This will include the strict monitoring of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.
